Where Memories Are Made

The Cloisters

Settled high on a hill in Lutherville among 60 acres of secluded woods, Sumner and Dudrea Parker designed The Cloisters to highlight their extensive collection of medieval artwork and artifacts, and now their masterpiece is available to showcase your special event.

The Cloisters, also referred to as Cloisters Castle, was built about 1930 and is a 2 1⁄2-story house that is highly picturesque and features a multiplicity of architectural ornament. The house is principally composed of large, random-sized blocks of grey and gold Butler stone, some of which was quarried on the estate and all of which comes from Maryland quarries. The roof, consisting of heavy Butler stone flagstones arranged in an overlapping pattern and secured by iron pins, is the only one of its kind in the United States. The Cloisters reflects the beauty and grandeur of medieval Europe, with delicately carved wood, exquisitely detailed stained glass, and ornately designed wrought iron.

The cloistered garden, from which the house takes its name, is located on the north side, just off of the Gallery. To the northwest of the house, is a stunning windmill in addition to an amphitheater and lovely courtyard. Cloisters Castle boasts four working fireplaces, grand spiral staircases and rooms on the 2nd floor which may be used as a bridal suite/groom’s room. The first floor will accommodate up to 150 for a seated meal. There is an intimate chapel next to the gardens although most guests prefer to use the outdoor space for ceremonies if the weather permits.

Whether you are planning a wedding, mitzvah, social gathering, corporate function or fundraiser, The Cloisters will provide an unforgettable setting for you and your guests.
